Aston Martin has issued a recall on 17,590 cars because of a potentially defective part, in a move thought to be the biggest recall in the luxury carmaker’s history
The recall is thought to account for most of the marque’s cars built since late 2007 and applies to all models apart from the new Vanquish coupe and Volante models.
A BBC report suggested the recall was issued following the discovery that a Chinese sub-supplier was allegedly using counterfeit plastic material in part of the accelerator pedal.
Aston Martin, which manufacturers in warwickshire, reportedly said it was concerned the pedal arm may break although there have been no reports of any accidents.
A spokesman told the BBC it would now bring manufacture of the pedal arm back to the UK.
According to the report the recall includes 1,553 in the UK and covers all left-hand-drive models built since November 2007 and all right-hand-drive models built since May 2012, affecting about 75% of all cars built in those periods.
The voluntary recall has been welcomed by a leading supply chain specialist.
“By issuing a voluntary recall, Aston Martin has shown that customer safety is the top priority. Transparency and clear communication by the car manufacturer is key here to help the situation be resolved with least disruption to customers,” said Farzad Henareh, director of business development at Stericycle ExpertSOLUTIONS, a specialist in industry recalls.
“Aston Martin’s situation is not uncommon. As supply chains become longer, with greater geographic spread, quality assurance becomes more difficult. Aston Martin is now quickly offering its customers a solution to resolve the issue, and most likely will begin investigations into how the problem could arise in order to avoid similar issues in the future”
