London Motorists could be greatly affected by these new plans, which have been proposed by the London Mayor in an attempt to slash pollution in the city.

Under these new plans made by Sadiq Khan, the May of London, car use in the capital will reduce by three million a day. The capital will the the first city in the UK to introduce a pay-per-mile charge and it may replace the existing Congestion Charge in the future.

The amount motorists will be charged is still undecided. The proposal suggests ‘a future scheme that reflects distance, time, emissions, road danger and other factors in an integrated way.’ As well as ‘more sophisticated road user charging and/or workplace parking levy schemes.’

It has been reported that the existing Congestion Charge that charges motorists a flat rate of £11.50 when they enter the city centre will be replaced by this new system. It has been pointed out that since the Congestion Charge was put in place fourteen years ago, ‘the challenge facing central London has changed,’ due to drivers choosing to enter the city centre during periods where the charge is not enforced to avoid the fee.

Sadiq Khan hopes penalties will encourage the use of public transport. He has said that the current proportion of journeys taken by public transport is 64% and he hopes that this new charge will increase this to 80% whilst also reducing the amount of motorists of London roads by 3 million a day.

‘Healthy routes’ where pedestrians and cyclists would be given priority as well as roads and parking places replaced with cycle lanes and pedestrian zones is another area that they Mayor is considering introducing.

The consultation will run until 2 October 2017.
